Village Guardians within the East Gate of Buan

Dongjung-ri, a gateway connecting the roads from Jeonju to Buan-eup, has a stone guardian pole.

Village Guardians within the West Gate of Buan

About 100 m west of Buan-gun Office stands a dolsotdae, a type of “grandmother” guardian pole, and two “grandfather” stone guardian posts, 2 m apart from each other. On the 15th day of the first lunar month, villagers gather and have a tug-of-war competition, and hang the rope on the dolsotdae toward the west.

Village Guardian of Dolmosan Mountain

Village guardian pole standing in front of the Dolmosan Village in Naeyo-ri, Buan-eup is a 2.5 m granite guardian pole with a sculpture of a stone duck on top.
This pole is said to guard the entrance of village and bring peace and prosperity to the people of the village.

Suseongdang Shrine

Suseongdang Shrine is a shrine located on top of the Jeokbyeokgang Cliff, about 3 km north of Gyeokpo Beach along the coastal road. It is a shrine dedicated to the guardian deity of the seas, Gaeyang Halmi. According to the legends, Gaeyang Halmi is a giant that walks the West Sea wearing wooden shoes. She measures the depth of the sea to protect the fishers, and pacifies the waves and storms of the sea to allow the fishers to harvest the rich seafood of the area.

Village Guardian of Udong-ri

Located in Udong Village, in Udong-ri, Boan-myeon, this village guardian pole is a typical one of this region, and is also called Orisotdae, Orisusaldae, and Orisaldae. The divine host is the hackberry tree in the village, some 300 years old. A bedrock of granite, 246 cm tall and 182 cm in girth, is erected next to the tree, upon which a 10 m-high pine tree pole is erected and a sculpture of a duck with seven tails made out of bamboo plates are placed.

Wido Ttibaennori

Wido Ttibaennori (Ttibae Boat Festival of Wido Island) is held in Dae-ri, on Wido Island. Wido Island is located about 40 minutes west of Gyeokpohang Port by boat. Dae-ri has a large tradition of a communal ceremony, which is held on the third day of the first lunar month with the wishes of the village's prosperity, peace, and the washing away of its bad luck by the sea.

Village Guardians of Daebeol-ri

The village of Daebeol-ri is protected by a pair of gigantic stone guardian, erected on the southeastern side of the village, and the wooden guardian pole. Like many of the village guardians in the area, the deity of these guardians is a woman. The pole was shaped out of a gigantic slab of granite, standing 380 cm high and having a bottom circumference of 175 cm. There are two stone birds on top. The grandfather village guardian is a wooden pole fashioned out of a large pine tree from Gujisan Mountain nearby.
