Introduction
About a 5-minute drive from Saemangeum Reclaimed Land, the approach to Buan Dam had a simply breathtaking view.
If driving along the coastal roads brings one closer to the beauty of the West Coast, the road to Buan Dam brings one closer to the secrets of the Naebyeonsan Mountain. When driving to the Buan Dam, there is a place when one feels that one has to stop, because the view is so beautiful that it might as well be the Buan Dam Park. It is actually the Jiksocheon Park, which was created in between Saemangeum and Buan Dam, along the route that Jiksocheon Stream flows from its origin near the Jikso Falls to Buan Dam and Saemangeum area.
Jiksocheon Park is formed around a reservoir made by trapping the water from Buan Dam. Between the majestic cliff circling the area like a screen and clear waters of the reservoir, it gives the visitors yet another glimpse into the beauty of Buan.
Jiksocheon Park has restrooms and parking lots, which makes it a favored stop-over destination on the drive between Saemangeum Embankment to Buan Dam. The area beyond the lake lies the Byeorak Falls. Its name (lightning) comes from the fact that the waterfall cannot be seen most of the time, only appearing for short periods when the Buan Dam's water table rises. That means that lucky visitors would even get to see the waterfall as well.
Driving for about a kilometer along the Jiksocheon Park brings one to the Buan Dam Water Cultural Center. Jiksocheon Park includes a number of facilities, such as the Water Cultural Center, built to promote the importance of water; wildflower rest area; Buan Dam Management Office; Literature Hill; and an outdoor stage with a water fountain. Buan Dam is especially popular in summer because it is a great place for families. The clear water from Buan Dam offers a natural swimming pool for children, while the shades under the trees offer a good picnic spot for families. The park has a convenience store and restroom facilities.
Buan Dam Water Cultural Center
Buan Dam's Water Cultural Center was designed to build a cultural space that can demonstrate the importance of water to its visitors.
Water Cultural Center is housed in a 3-story building with 3 exhibition halls and a multimedia room. The first exhibition hall covers the basic information about water, and the importance of water toward life. It shows how the mysteries of Buan's water-based ecosystem came to be. The second exhibition hall focuses on Buan Dam, showing the appearances of water damages caused by flooding in comparison with today's appearance. It also covers the past, present, and future of Buan and demonstrates the beauty of nature and life.
The third exhibition hall focuses on Buan's life and culture. Through videos covering the themes of water's past, present, and future, visitors are invited to drawthe importance and wonder of water.
Vehicle access to Buan Dam is controlled. Visitors are required to park their cars in the parking lot and walk to the dam. Walking along the path built into thePark brings one to the beautiful scenery of Buanho Lake.
