- The Saemangeum Sea Wall is the most extensive operation in Korea's modern history. The "sae" in Saemankum comes from the idea that this sea wall creates new land by merging two of Korea's most fertile fields; the rest of the name was made by merging the "man" of Mangyeong Field and the "kum" of Gimje Field.
The sea wall is 33 km long, making it the longest sea wall in the world, and runs from
- Buan County, Byeonsan-myeon Daehang-ri to Garyeokdo, Sinsido, Yamido, and Bieungdo. The sea within that area will be made into land. The new land created will be 40,100ha and is 140 times larger than Yeoido.
The construction started in November of 1991 and is expected to end in 2011. Large agricultural fields, forest industries, and international trade ports will be created and the area will serve as the leading site for the development of the West Coast, as well as becoming the second largest tour site of Buan.
People can observe the construction of the Saemangeum industries from the Saemangeum Exhibition Center. There is an observatory platform with telescopes, and people can tour the construction site. The straight road of the Saemangeum sea wall, which brings to the mind Germany's autobahns, is a fantastic driving course for car manias.
