Chaeseokgang

  • Chaeseokgang's photo
  • The Chaeseokgang, along with the Naesou Temple, is the most famous historical spot in Buan. The name Chaeseok comes from the following story: Lee Taebaek of China was riding a boat on the Chaeseokgang and tried to catch the moon reflected in the water, only to drown and kill himself. The river in this story and the Chaeseokgang in Korea look similar, so the same name was used.
  • The base of this river consists of granite and gneiss from the Cambria period. Coastal erosion during the Cretaceous period of the Middle Ages (about 70 million years ago) made the coast look as if millions of books are piled on the coast. This river is not only a beautiful touring site but also an educational site in which students can observe the structure of sedimentary layers.
During the two ebb times, one can see the sea creatures on the sedimentary layers and caves created by coastal erosion.
Especially, the sunset and evening glow of Byeonsan peninsula that can be seen from the caves is creates a grand sight. Chaeseokgang is designated as Jeollabuk-do treasure number 28 (area:120 thousand 7372㎡) and is being managed by the province.
