Site of Sir. Ganjae

  • Site of Sir. Ganjae's photo
  • This site is where the great scholar Ganjae Junwoo of the late Han Dynasty settled to live in his old years. Sir. Ganjae was born in 1814 (7th year of King Hyunjong's regime). His real name is Damyang, and Ganjae is his pen name.
When Sir. Ganjae was 72 years old he came to Gaehwado, which was an island back then, and renamed the island as Gaehwado, giving a different meaning to the name: a place that links Korea and China.
  • Until his death as a 82 year old man in 1922, Sir. Ganjae dedicated himself in teaching students and writing.
Sir. Ganjae received his education under Imhunhui. He rejected all government positions and devoted his life in studying Sung Confucianism. Sir. Ganjae is highly appraised in Korea's confucianism due to his academic work and dedication to Sung Confucianism as the last classical Sung confucianist of the Joseon Dynasty. The shrine that exists to this day was reconstructed by his followers in 1932. Sir. Ganjae's grave is in Yongin of Gyeonggi-do.
