Dolmosan Dangsan

  • Dolmosan Dangsan's photo
  • Dangsan is the guardian spirit of the town and also the place where the spirit lives. Thus the townspeople consider the Dangsan as sacred and hold religious services to the Dangsan every year to pray for security, prosperity and comfort.
Activities such as tug of war or playing folk music are expressive forms of the townspeople's wishes to the guardian spirit. Through these activities the townspeople also enhance their spirit for cooperation and a sense of oneness.
  • The Dolmosan Dangsan ritual is held on the 15th of January each year, and the activities are done in the following order: tug of war, performance of folk music, the Dangsanjae, and dressing the Dangsan. It is said that if the women's team win in the tug of war, that year the town will have a good harvest; thus the women's team always win the game.
There is a geomantic story about this Dangsan. The town is shaped like a ship floating on water, and ships can easily break if they are too light. Thus the townspeople put up a large stone, as if putting a mast on a ship, so that the town could be stable.
