- During the Joseon Dynasty, this is where the west gate of the Buaneup province stood. This mountain was named Soumoonan Dangsan (meaning 'mountain within the west gate') because it was a mountain(dangsan) on the inside of the west gate.
To this day this town is called Souwaelee, and this name is the Chinese form of the meaning "a town on the outside of the west gate."
- This mountain is the central mountain of the three mountains within the three gates of the Buaneup province. The Dangsan was considered as a spirit that provided well being and guarded the people within the province from sickness. People prayed to the Dangsan and believed in its power. Thus the Dangsan was considered a sacred thing.
A gate that was built in 1689 (15th year of King Sookjong) still exists to this day, making this site also a valuable place to search for historic material. Originally, the mountain and the tree statues (Jangsung) were located across the road and to the north, but it was moved to its current position due to the opening of a road.
